On August 10, 2023, Magdalena Martinez successfully defended her PhD thesis titled “The Role of Stakeholders in Outreach Policy: A Case Study of Private and Public Universities in São Paulo, Brazil.” Her thesis investigated how Brazilian universities approach their outreach activities, which are enshrined in the constitution as a fundamental university mission.
Drawing from interviews with experts, academic administrators, faculty, and students in four universities, she explains how extension stakeholders navigate a complex system to exert influence on institutional policy by employing a diverse set of strategies. Universities respond to national policies and societal demands, while asserting their values and traditions.
